Village life: Hutton-le-Hole

Hutton-le-Hole is a picturesque village built around a central green and a stream. Key spots on your doorstep include:

  • Ryedale Folk Museum: 19 reconstructed historic buildings showcasing regional history.
  • Food and drink: The Crown for meals and drinks, local tea rooms, and an ice cream shop.
  • Seasonal highlights: head to nearby Farndale in April for its famous wild daffodil walks.

Recommended walks and cycling

Rosedale East and the tea garden

Walk up the hillside to "The Line", a historic 1850s iron ore railway, and stop at Dale Head Farm Tea Garden (open Wednesday to Sunday).

Directions: from The Green, drive up the village and turn right toward Lastingham. Go over the hill and the cattle grid, then fork left across the moors to Rosedale Abbey. Head up the dale toward Castleton; after half a mile, turn left toward "Rosedale East". Follow the narrow road for about 3 miles to the end.

Other routes

  • Cropton Forest walk: a scenic circular forest route starting from Cropton Lodges (YO18 8ES), with a cafe at the end.
  • Pickering to Grosmont rail walk: take the steam train to Grosmont and walk back along the disused railway line stream path (a map is recommended for the first half).
  • Sandsend beach: wide, dog-friendly beach walks just north of Whitby.
  • Cycling: rent bikes at the Dalby Forest Cycle Hub.
  • Trail planning: explore route maps on The Walking Englishman or the North York Moors National Park site.

  • The Star Inn, Harome: Michelin-starred dining near Helmsley (bar seating available if full).

  • Beadlam Grange Farm Shop and Bistro: a good stop for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea.
  • The Feversham Arms, Farndale: a popular local pub among our guests.
